Mount Greylock and Adams: A Cannabis-Aware Mountain Day

April 22, 20262 min read

Mount Greylock at 3,491 feet is the highest point in Massachusetts, with the summit road climbing out of Lanesborough on the south side and dropping down to North Adams on the north. Adams sits at the eastern base, the older mill town that gives the mountain its working-class context. A cannabis-aware mountain day keeps the climb itself fully sober.

The Summit Day

The summit road opens annually around mid-May once the snowpack melts and closes around late October. Bascom Lodge, the CCC-built stone summit lodge, runs a small cafe through the season. The five-state view from the War Memorial Tower is the obvious payoff. Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, including the entire Mount Greylock State Reservation, the summit lodge, and the trails.

The Adams Base

The town of Adams, on Route 8 east of Greylock, has been the working-class anchor of the northern Berkshires for over a century. The Mohican-Mohawk Trail through town, the Adams Town Hall, the small commercial spine on Park Street. Adults 21+ planning the day should treat any dispensary visit as the back end of the day, with consumption only at a private rental or B&B in Adams or one of the surrounding towns.

The Hike Frame

For those climbing on foot rather than driving, the Bellows Pipe Trail from Adams or the Hopper Trail from Williamstown both make for solid all-day climbs. The walk-not-drive rule applies absolutely after consuming, and the same logic applies to the more involved trail descents.
