Adams

Mount Greylock’s eastern gateway, the Susan B. Anthony birthplace, and a working-town identity between Pittsfield and North Adams.

Adams sits between Pittsfield and North Adams along the Hoosic River valley, in the shadow of Mount Greylock to the west — the town is one of the eastern gateways to the Greylock summit. Susan B. Anthony was born here in 1820, and the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum preserves the family farmhouse on East Road. The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail runs through Adams, providing an 11-mile flat bike-and-walk corridor connecting Lanesborough through Adams to Cheshire. The town itself is more workmanlike than the resort-town Berkshires south or the arts-driven North Adams adjacent; the food scene leans casual, the bars carry a longer working-class history. Cannabis retail has settled along the Route 8 corridor. For visiting adults 21+, Adams works as a Greylock summit-day base or a stop on a longer northern Berkshires weekend, with a quieter rhythm than the marquee towns nearby.
