The Berkshires Arts Season Does Not Stop When Tanglewood Does

The Berkshires have a marketing problem they have never solved: Tanglewood is so dominant that the nine months around it read as an off-season rather than a season. The county runs a full arts calendar from October into spring, in rooms that are easier to get into and at rates that bear no relationship to August.

North Adams: MASS MoCA through the winter

MASS MoCA is the anchor and it does not slow down. **Jason Moran's *Black Stars: Writing in the Dark*** opens December 17 in Building 6, working through the residue live music leaves behind, from a pianist who has spent two decades moving between the concert hall and the gallery. It stays up well into 2027.

The Chalet is the winter courtyard bar, open weekends through the cold months with fire, food and a rotating drink program in the middle of the campus. Adults 21+ for the bar; the galleries are open to all ages.

North Adams in February is cheap, cold and empty, and the museum is one of the largest contemporary art spaces in the country. The math is not complicated.

Pittsfield: the Colonial, and First Fridays

The restored 1903 Colonial Theatre on South Street carries the fall slate. David Sedaris reads new work on October 1, Ronstadt Rewind follows on October 3, and Berkshire Theatre Group programs the fall Colonial more tightly than the summer one.

First Fridays at Five runs the Artswalk along North Street from 5 to 8 PM on the first Friday of the month, with galleries, studios and storefronts open late. Free, and the most reliable read available on what Pittsfield's working artists are making outside festival season.

Lenox and Stockbridge: the light installations

NightWood at The Mount in Lenox is an immersive sound and light walk along a three-quarter-mile route through the woods and gardens at Edith Wharton's estate, running after dark through late fall and the holidays. The route is unpaved and unlit outside the installation. Wear real shoes.

Winterlights at Naumkeag in Stockbridge puts hundreds of thousands of LEDs across the Choate estate gardens from late November through the first days of January, dark December 24 and 25. Timed entry and it sells out. The Trustees post the 2026 calendar in the fall.

Festival of Trees at Hancock Shaker Village fills the village with more than 75 decorated trees from November 21 through December 28, Friday through Sunday. The Round Stone Barn in the snow justifies the admission on its own.

What it costs

This is the part that matters. Lodging in Lenox, Great Barrington and Williamstown in January and February runs a fraction of the Tanglewood-season rate. The restaurants that stay open all winter are cooking for regulars. Reservations are same-week.

The trade is that a meaningful share of the county's dining room closes for part of the winter or drops to a short week. Call first.
