Great Barrington
Main Street’s restaurant row, Mahaiwe arts programming, and the most-walkable downtown in the southern Berkshires.
Great Barrington runs the Berkshires the way a small New England town is supposed to: a main street with real restaurants you'd drive to from anywhere, an arts venue (the Mahaiwe) that programs international acts on weekends, and a weekend rhythm that pulls Brooklyn and Boston up the road for long weekends from May through October. The Housatonic River traces the eastern edge, Monument Mountain anchors the hike-and-view side of the day, and the surrounding farmland keeps the food scene supplied with what the menus describe — accurately — as actually local. Massachusetts's adult-use cannabis program means licensed retail has settled in since 2018, including in Great Barrington itself, and the visitor pattern for cannabis-aware adults 21+ tends to be: late breakfast at one of the cafes on Main, a hike or river walk in the afternoon, a serious dinner at one of the destination restaurants, and a quiet evening at the rental.
