Berkshires Ski Season Opening Dates 2026–27: Jiminy Peak, Bousquet and Butternut

Berkshires ski season opening dates for 2026–27 depend on the same thing every year: a run of cold nights cold enough for snowmaking. None of the county's three main ski areas had posted an official opening day as of late October, but their recent history is a reliable guide. Jiminy Peak has opened around Thanksgiving, while Bousquet and Ski Butternut have followed in the first half of December. Here is what each mountain did last season, what has changed, and what adults 21+ need to know about the cannabis rules on a winter trip west.

Jiminy Peak, Hancock

Jiminy Peak, at 37 Corey Road in Hancock, is usually first to open in the Berkshires. In 2025 it opened on Friday, November 28, the day after Thanksgiving, with top-to-bottom terrain off the Express lift and beginner terrain off the novice area, according to MassLive's roundup of New England openings. Third-party ski sites project a similar Thanksgiving-week start in 2026, but projections are only projections, and the resort's snow report is the source to trust.

Early-season skiing anywhere in the Berkshires means a fraction of the mountain, often a single top-to-bottom route while snowmaking builds out the rest, so read the trail count on the snow report before paying full price. Jiminy also lists night skiing among its winter activities.

Bousquet Mountain, Pittsfield

Bousquet is inside the city of Pittsfield, which makes it the closest ski area to a Berkshire downtown. The 2025–26 winter was its 94th season, and it opened on Friday, December 12, 2025.

The mountain has been reworked since Mill Town Capital bought it in 2020: a 15,000-square-foot base lodge, new trails, electric snowmaking equipment and an expanded snow-tubing area with cabanas, fire pits and holiday lights. Bousquet joined the Indy Pass for the 2025–26 season, and Pittsfield's planning board has approved a plan for cabins at the base, to be added over several years starting in 2026. With a mid-December opening in 2025, a similar window in 2026 is a fair bet. Watch bousquetmountain.com for the announcement.

Ski Butternut, Great Barrington

Ski Butternut, in Great Barrington, opened on Friday, December 6, 2024, a week after wildfires burned more than 1,600 acres on East Mountain and came close to its slopes. Opening day arrived with six inches of fresh snow, and the resort said it hoped to run into late March or early April, weather permitting. Butternut's 2025–26 opening was scheduled for early December as well, so watch for an announcement once the first cold stretch arrives.

Butternut is the South County option, and the drive from Great Barrington's Main Street is short.

Before the first trip

  • Check the snow report, not the calendar. Early-season terrain is limited and opening dates slide with the weather.
  • Buy ahead. All three mountains sell tickets online, and early-season weekends near the holidays fill.
  • Plan the roads. Route 7 is the county's north-south spine, and the hill roads to the base areas ice overnight.

Where the licensed shops are

Adults 21+ visiting from out of state will find the county's licensed dispensaries concentrated in a few towns, all listed on the Cannabis Control Commission's Where to Buy map as of 2026:

  • Pittsfield, the closest cluster to Jiminy and Bousquet, has seven adult-use stores, including Potency and HiBrid on East Street, Berkshire Roots on Dalton Avenue and Temescal Wellness on Callahan Drive.
  • Lanesborough has Liberty Market at 35 North Main Street, on Route 7 north of Pittsfield.
  • Great Barrington, nearest Butternut, has several, including Theory Wellness at 394 Stockbridge Road and Farnsworth Fine Cannabis at 126 Main Street.

The dispensary directory carries current listings and hours.

The rule, plainly

The Cannabis Control Commission, at masscannabiscontrol.com, publishes the state rules, and they apply on the mountain as much as in town:

  • Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces. The CCC spells it out as no smoking, vaping or eating cannabis in public places or on federal land.
  • An open container of cannabis in a car's passenger area is illegal. Purchases go in a closed container, in the trunk or a locked glove compartment.
  • Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, and on icy hill roads in the dark it is also a quick way to end up in a snowbank.
  • Crossing a state line with cannabis is illegal, which matters for skiers driving in from New York or Connecticut.

What it means for a ski weekend

Ski areas are private property and set their own rules on top of the state's, and lift lines, base lodges, parking lots and tubing hills are all shared space. Impairment on a slope is a hazard to everyone else on it. Lodging sets its own policy too, and most inns and hotels ban smoking on the property, so check the terms before booking.

At the counter, the state's purchase limit as of 2026, under H.5350, is 2 ounces of flower or its equivalent of 10 grams of concentrate or 1,000 mg of edibles per transaction, for adults 21+ with valid ID. For edibles, start low, go slow.

The short version

As of late October, none of the Berkshires' three main ski areas had announced a 2026–27 opening day. Last season Jiminy Peak opened November 28, the day after Thanksgiving, and Bousquet followed on December 12. Butternut's most recent documented opening was December 6, 2024. Watch each resort's snow report, buy tickets ahead, and keep cannabis closed in the car and off the mountain. For winter events across the county, see the events hub.
