The turnpike store
Lee is one of the first Mass Pike exits inside Massachusetts for eastbound drivers coming from New York, and the first Berkshire exit for westbound traffic from Boston and Springfield. Canna Provisions sits right at it, which explains most of its search traffic. The store calls Lee the "Gateway to the Berkshires," and for anyone driving in on a Friday night, the 7 AM weekend opening and the 10 PM close make it the easiest stop in the county to fit around a drive.
When it opened in July 2019, CEO Meg Sanders, a veteran of Colorado's cannabis industry, told WAMC the investment ran past $1 million and the store had hired 43 full-time staff, which it calls guides. Sanders co-founded the company with Erik Williams.
What it is known for
The shelf draw is Smash Hits, the company's own flower line, developed by its director of cultivation, Greg "Chemdog" Krzanowski, the grower credited with the original Chemdog cultivar. The store also runs daily specials and a weekly features menu. Canna Provisions has a second store in Holyoke, at 380 Dwight Street, for anyone heading east toward the Pioneer Valley.
Lee's other dispensary
Lee has a second licensed store on the north side of town:
- Sweetgrass Botanicals, 635 Laurel Street (Route 20), just past the Lenox town line. Its site lists 9 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday and 10 AM to 7 PM Sunday, takes cash and debit, and has an ATM on site. The building is a 6,000-square-foot lakeside lodge with a viewing window onto its solventless hash workshop, and a 46-space main lot.
The two stores sit at opposite ends of town. Canna Provisions suits the arrival off the Pike; Sweetgrass is the shorter hop for anyone staying in Lenox or on the Lenox side of Lee. A few miles further north, Kapha Cannabis at 439 Pittsfield Road in Lenox is the next licensed store on the CCC map. The dispensary directory carries current hours for all three, and the Lee and Lenox pages cover the towns around them.
What to bring and what it costs
- ID. Adults 21+ only. Massachusetts does not require residency, so a New York, Connecticut or other state license, or a passport, works.
- Limits. As of 2026, under H.5350, a retailer can sell an adult up to 2 ounces of flower, or its equivalent of 10 grams of concentrate or 1,000 mg of edibles, per day. Canna Provisions notes that mixed baskets count toward the same 2-ounce flower equivalent.
- Taxes. Adult-use sales carry the 10.75% state excise tax and 6.25% sales tax, plus up to 3% local tax where the town has adopted it.
- Edibles. Start low, go slow. A low-milligram first serving and a long wait before any second one.
The rule, plainly
The Cannabis Control Commission, at masscannabiscontrol.com, publishes the state rules:
- Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces. The CCC spells it out as no smoking, vaping or eating cannabis in public places or on federal land.
- An open container of cannabis in a car's passenger area is illegal. Keep purchases closed, in the trunk or a locked glove compartment.
- Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal.
- Crossing a state line with cannabis is illegal, by car, train or any other way, even into a state where adult-use is legal.
What it means for a Lee visit
A turnpike store means a lot of customers who arrived from somewhere else and will leave the same way. Purchases bought in Lee cannot ride back across the New York or Connecticut line, however short the drive. Lee's downtown on Main Street, the Housatonic riverbanks and October Mountain State Forest are public space; at roughly 16,500 acres, October Mountain is the largest state forest in Massachusetts, and its main entrance is on Woodland Road in Lee. The Appalachian Trail also crosses the town. Inns and short-term rentals set their own rules, and many ban smoking on the property, so read the terms before booking.
Lee in winter
Winter is when Lee works as a base rather than a drive-through. The Pike makes it the fastest Berkshire town to reach from the east, Jiminy Peak, Bousquet and Butternut are all within reach for a ski day, and Lenox's off-season arts calendar is ten minutes north. For what is on across the county from December to February, see the events hub.
