Bash Bish Falls and Mount Washington: A Cannabis-Aware Hiking Day

April 22, 20262 min read

Bash Bish Falls drops 80 feet through a slot in the bedrock at the very southwestern corner of Massachusetts, in the town of Mount Washington. The state forest around it is one of the quieter southern Berkshires hiking destinations, with Egremont and Sheffield as the obvious base towns 30 minutes east.

The Falls Hike

The shorter trail to the falls comes in from the New York side off Route 344, with a steep half-mile descent to the base. The Massachusetts side, off Falls Road from Mount Washington, runs longer but stays on Bay State terrain the whole way. Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, including the falls, the state forest, and the trail corridors.

The Egremont and Sheffield Base

Egremont and Sheffield sit 30 minutes east of the falls and are the practical lodging anchors for a Bash Bish day. The Old Mill in Egremont, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield, and a handful of B&Bs across both towns. Adults 21+ planning the day should bring no cannabis to the trailhead and consume only at the rental at the end of the day. The Drive Considerations

The drive to Bash Bish from Egremont includes some of the steeper roads in the Berkshires, especially the climb up Mount Washington itself. The walk-not-drive rule applies absolutely, and the descent road has an extra layer of attention required no matter what.
