Dispensaries in Great Barrington, MA: Where the Licensed Shops Are and What to Know

Great Barrington was home to the first recreational cannabis store in Berkshire County. Where the licensed shops are now, what to know before the visit, and Main Street, the River Walk and Monument Mountain around them.

5 min read

Dispensaries in Great Barrington, MA sit in two places: on Main Street downtown, and on Stockbridge Road, the commercial strip running north on Route 7. The town has a claim most Berkshire towns cannot make. Theory Wellness on Stockbridge Road became the first recreational cannabis store in Berkshire County to start sales, on January 11, 2019. For adults 21+ visiting, here is how to find the licensed shops, what to know before the visit, and the town around them.

Licensed shops in Great Barrington

As of 2026, two stores are verified on their own sites:

  • Theory Wellness, 394 Stockbridge Road. The county's first recreational store, open 8 AM to 10 PM every day, with online ordering.
  • Farnsworth Fine Cannabis, 126 Main Street, downtown. A family-owned shop that styles itself a museum for marijuana, with vintage accessories in the cases and appointments available alongside walk-ins. Its posted hours are 10 AM to 6 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10 AM to 7 PM Friday and Saturday, closing earlier than most.

Great Barrington has hosted more licensed retailers over the years, and stores open, close and change hands. The Cannabis Control Commission's Where to Buy tool, at masscannabiscontrol.com, lists every currently licensed store by address, and the dispensary directory carries Great Barrington, Sheffield and Egremont listings with current details.

Before the visit

  • ID. Adults 21+ only, with a valid government-issued photo ID. Massachusetts does not require residency, which matters in a town this close to New York and Connecticut.
  • 2026 limits. Since April 2026, adults 21+ can buy and carry up to 2 ounces of flower, 10 grams of concentrate and 1,000 mg of THC in edibles. Those are ceilings. With edibles, start low, go slow: a low-milligram serving and a long wait before any more.
  • License check. Verify licensed status via the Cannabis Control Commission at masscannabiscontrol.com.
  • Payment. Cash and debit are standard. Farnsworth lists cash and major debit cards.

The state line

Great Barrington sits within a short drive of both the New York and Connecticut borders, and a share of every store's customers drive in from one or the other. Cannabis bought in Massachusetts stays in Massachusetts. Crossing a state line with it is a federal offense, even into a state where adult-use is legal.

For the drive, purchases ride sealed. A broken seal or partly removed contents counts as an open container in Massachusetts; the trunk and a locked glove compartment are exempt. Never consume while driving or drive after consuming.

Where it can be used

Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces and anywhere tobacco smoking is banned, with a civil fine of up to $100. That covers Main Street, the River Walk and the trails. Use is legal in a private residence, but landlords, inns and short-term rentals can ban it, and many in South County do.

The town around the shops

Main Street and the Mahaiwe

Downtown Great Barrington is a compact, walkable Main Street. The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center on Castle Street opened on September 26, 1905, and still hosts concerts, film and talks. Its name comes from a Mahican term for the place downstream on the Housatonic.

The Housatonic River Walk

Behind Main Street, the Housatonic River Walk follows the west bank of the river for about half a mile, a greenway built by volunteers who started clearing the trash-strewn bank in 1988. It was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2009. Its downstream end includes the W.E.B. Du Bois River Garden, near the spot where Du Bois was born in 1868 and which he described as being "born by a golden river."

Monument Mountain

North of town, Monument Mountain is a Trustees of Reservations property, protected since 1899. On August 5, 1850, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville climbed it on a picnic hike, sheltered from a thunderstorm together, and began the friendship that runs through the making of Moby-Dick.

All three are public spaces and places to walk, not to consume.

The short version

Great Barrington's licensed shops are on Stockbridge Road and Main Street, with Theory Wellness, the county's first recreational store, and Farnsworth Fine Cannabis verified as of 2026. Bring ID, check the license through the CCC, keep purchases sealed and in Massachusetts, and save consumption for a private residence that allows it. The Great Barrington town page covers the rest of the town, and the events hub carries what is on in South County this season.
